Family Photoshoots
What should I wear for a photoshoot with my significant other?
One of the things we notice when it comes to a photoshoot is that men’s fashion is always an afterthought. For example, how many shoots have you seen where the women is dressed to the nines? Whether it’s for an engagement, baby shoot or family portraits, there seems to be a disparity in the affair between the couple. The woman has her hair, nails, makeup done, while donning a beautiful dress with a long train flying across the sunset. Then there’s the man in a short sleeve flannel and boot cut jeans with converses. While there’s nothing wrong with boot cut jeans or converses, the problem is that just like any social gathering, it’s important to look the part.
Photoshoots are not cheap. It can range $150-700/hour depending on location and the photographer. Why not invest in a pair of pants that will match your significant other. If she is casual and wearing jeans, then jeans are more than fine. If she is wearing a gown, jeans will probably not work but perhaps a black pair of chinos might do the trick. There’s a time and place for everything and men’s fashion is more than just a pair of jeans.
So what should you wear?
Talk to your significant other. Is she going for a formal shoot? What season of the year is the shoot? Is it lounging in the house or underneath a waterfall? Communication is key. While we are not advertising it to be a matchy-matchy Sadies Hawkins dance, it should be communicated between the two of you in what you expect from the photos. If she’s wearing heels, perhaps basketball shoes should be passed up for some dress shoes. The same idea applies to tops as well. No matter how expensive or nice your short sleeve shirt is, it doesn’t make sense to wear it while your significant other is in a chiffon and lace gown. You can’t go wrong with a nice, crisp, fitted dress shirt and a pair of chinos. Be intentional with putting together an outfit that matches her because she definitely put a lot of thought into what she will be wearing.
